Summary

51.97% of $ARB total supply is ongoing a 4 years unlock schedule that started in Mars 2023, in theory it means that by Mars 2027 there will be no more increase in circulating supply. it is not clear if this can push the price up starting April 2027 for example? or how much $ARB have to be locked again? and how much time is needed to lock enough for the price to start increasing?

$ARB is a governance token with a capped supply and it is not positioned as a store of value, but it can increase in value because developers, delegates,.... on Arbitrum will be interested in holding it.

Launched around 5 years ago, Arbitrum blockchain is a getting a strong traction because it is solving some Ethereum cons. more dApps and chains on Arbitrum will probably push $ARB price up.

The problem is the $ARB token, only 325.72 million tokens are delegated, this is 3.26% of the total supply of 10B. if Arbitrum needs 5 years to get to onboard 1,030 dApps, 24 chains, and 3.26% delegated tokens, it means that it may need 50 years (to simplify, for this post) to get to 33% delegated tokens for example.

this is probably the case of a governance token that need to stay low in value so that no one alone can control the votes!?

As a governance token, $ARB tokenomics are designed to repel traders and retail investors. what the ArbitrumDAO need is governance experts, institutional or at least qualified individuals interested in participating in Arbitrum governance. there will probably be volatility triggered by news for speculators but it will always be short lived.

if Arbitrum can defeat, eliminate or acquire other Layer 2 on Ethereum? they certainly can not stop the launch of new Layer 2 solutions for Ethereum,

$ARB appears to be a long term investment, with 2028 at least as a horizon, and could take 10 years to hire enough governance experts. $ARB should probably be contained in no more than 0.5% of an entire crypto portfolio, depending on the size of your portfolio.

6- Stakeholders

6-A- Delegate

delegate is a member of the Arbitrum DAO community who has been elected to represent other token holders and vote on their behalf. Delegates are elected by token holders who choose to grant their voting power to them. Delegates are required to follow the protocols defined by the constitution of the arbitrum DAO, and must act in the best interest of the token holders whom they represent.

6-B- Delegator

token holders have two options for participating in governance : they can either vote directly on proposals by delegating to themselves, or delegate their voting power to a representative. A delegator is a party who assigns their voting power to someone else, to vote on their behalf.

6-C- Exchange Traded Funds - ETFs

if a fund can act as a delegate in Arbitrum governance? an ETF certainly can not, the ETF shares are meant to be liquid, it means that holders can sell them at any time during standard stock market trading hours.

So what if delegates formed investment funds with fixed terms? 90 days for example. this can increase delegated tokens in governance and bring gov experts the DAO need, but can a staking ETF participate in governance in good faith? Basically yes, a well established institutional will likely serve Arbitrum interest.

The table bellow show ETPs actually available in the market:

21shares Arbitrum ETP $1,075,210.66
Virtune Arbitrum ETP $2,263,654

7- Arbitrum ups and downs ?

$ARB is a governance token, and in the blockchain context, the circulating supply, holding, price, .... are managed or controlled in a way that replace traditional centralized control with decentralized decision-making in DAOs. They allow holders to vote on proposals for protocol upgrades, treasury management, .... ensuring user-driven project development.

the user-driven approach replace shareholders in for profit organizations. in some way small holders help keep the voting power structure decentralized. and this what explain the tricky holding structure in the table bellow, like asking the question of who hold 51% of the votes?

7-A- Supply

Data in the table bellow from : arbitrum.foundation

ARB %
DAO treasury, governed by $ARB holders 3 528 000 000 35.28%
Offchain Labs team, future team, contributors + advisors 2 694 000 000 26.94%
investors 1 753 000 000 17.53%
individual wallets/ users of the Arbitrum platform 1 162 000 000 11.62%
Arbitrum Foundation 750 000 000 7.50%
DAOs building apps on Arbitrum 113 000 000 1.13%
Capped supply 10 000 000 000 100%

7-B- Unlock schedule

Data in the table bellow from : arbitrum.foundation

Token allocated over cadence
Offchain Labs team, future team + advisors 2 694 000 000 4 years monthly
investors 1 753 000 000 4 years monthly
Arbitrum Foundation 750 000 000 4 years second

8- Why would someone buy $ARB tokens ?

$ARB tokens owners can :

  • vote on governance protocols that affect the operation and evolution of the Arbitrum One and Arbitrum Nova chains,
  • vote on proposals for upgrades to the chain,
  • vote on proposals for how to use the funds within the DAO Treasury,….

Rewarding Active Delegate (RAD) program

the RAD program rewards active delegates based on their voting record and for sharing their voting rationale publicly. According to tally.xyz there is 75 delegates with 200,000 votes or more.

9- Why Arbitrum go down ?

$ARB supply is limited, which is not inflationary, this means that the supply is not what push the price of ARB down. the focus here should be on the circulating supply, basically what can increase the circulating supply and push the price down are events like: unstaking and unlocking,.....

List of possible reasons $ARB price can go down:

Stakeholder How they can push the price down?
individual holders start taking profit or selling their $ARB position
Payment solutions providers not interested in integrating ARB in their platforms
Social media influencer Start criticizing Arbitrum
ARB ETF holders Traditional investors start selling their ETF shares.

10- Why Arbitrum go up ?

New exchange listing can bring more exposure to speculators and investors, specially when it is a large crypto exchange and this can push the price of Arbitrum up.

acceptance as a payment by businesses, if merchants start accepting ARB as a payment, it will increase its utility and demand for the crypto because people will buy it to pay their bills for example.

List of possible reasons $ARB price can go up:

Stakeholder How they can push the price up?
Asset managers More asset managers see opportunity in launching an Arbitrum ETF, exposing ARB to large investors
Community Mobilize for more $ARB purchase
Corporate treasury Decide to invest more in $ARB
Skilled Delegates new highlly qualified delegates could be interested in monetizing their skills by becoming delegates, and will have to own or increase their $ARB holding.

Developers Deployment of new features or tools can attract developers looking for solutions for their projects.
Education Training programs for young developers can help spread knowledge specific to Arbitrum, help incubate new projects on Arbitrum.
