Summary

LayerZero suffered a security incident on april 18, 2026. many developers and integrators are leaving the protocol, the ZRO price is crashing, the team is probably still in crisis mode. Even though, LayerZero still have some good cards to play and will probably get out of this crisis with a better backlog.

ZRO has an ongoing unlock and vesting schedule expected to last until June 30, 2028. this means that price decline caused by unlock impact will in theory stop in June 2028. as of May 29, 2026 ZRO price at $1.12 is low, ZRO can be a good medium term investment, if a trader can hold until June 2028.

the opportunity that ZRO is presenting right now is not the end of the unlock program in 2 years, it is the planned ZERO L1 blockchain set to launch in fall 2026.

overall, a ZRO future holders should know that LayerZero is not for retail or individuals, it is targeted to institutional finance, it means LayerZero business could be sustainable and profitable in the long term. i think that allocating 1.5 % of your entire crypto portfolio is a good idea.

Trusted by leading protocols and connected to over 80 blockchains, Stargate transfers native assets quickly at low-cost, with guaranteed delivery and instant transaction settlement. With over $65B in value moved to date, stargate is the trusted bridge and the standard for how money move onchain.

7-C- Zero

Zero is a decentralized, muli-core blockchain that uses zero-knowledge proofs to separate execution from verification. It enables internet-scale throughput while keeping validation lightweight, permission less, and verifiable by consumer-grade hardware.

Zero is the Layer 1 blockchain LayerZero is launching for the workloads existing chains cannot carry : 24/7 capital markets, institutional clearing, and stablecoin payment at scale. DTCC, ICE, Citadel Securities, Tether, and google cloud are their day zero partners.

7-D- Workers

workers are specialized entities that interact with the protocol to perform essential functions :

7-D-1- Decentralized verifier Network

DVNs are independent entities that validate the authenticity and integrity of messages sent across blockchains with the layerZero ecosystem. They ensure that a message sent from a source chain arrives untempered at its destination.

7-D-2- Executors

Executors carry out transactions on behalf of applications once verification is complete.

9- ZRO ups and downs

ZRO supply is multi variable, the tokenomics allow for many operations :

  • - unlock,
  • - buybacks,
  • - burning,
  • - staking,

even though, the LayerZero is transparent about the numbers and recently communicating recent distribution.

Supply

the supply of ZRO token is capped at 1 billion tokens. This means that no more than this amount will ever be created.

the initial allocation breakdown was as follows:

Allocation distribution to / for ZRO %
Community Early, current, and future users, developers,…/community 383 M 38,30 %
C - retroactive initiatives eligible participants 85 M 8,50 %
C - future initiatives users, protocols, infra builders, and community members 153 M 15,30 %
C - ecosystem and growth ecosystem and growth 145 M 14,50 %
Strategic partners investors and advisors 322 M 32,20 %
core contributors LayerZero Labs employees, future team members 255 M 25,50 %
repurchase pledged to the community bucket 40 M 4,00 %
1 B 100,00 %

10- Why ZRO go down ?

10-A- Competition

developers and integrators are constantly comparing available chains and protocols, if a new upgrade allows them to develop new features, solve some development problems, reduce costs, reduce security risks,… they will choose to migrate, when ever the opportunity is presented. this will reduce ZRO integrators and userbase, lower demand and push ZRO price down.

10-B- Security

a security incident can cause fear, force more scrutiny on LayerZero security measures, trigger security reviews and protocols migrations to other crosschain networks, this will reduce ZRO integrators and userbase, lower demand and push ZRO price down.

10-C- Unlock program

LayerZero has an unlock and vesting schedule that according to tokenomics.com is expected to last until May 20, 2028. the last year of this unlock program will have a 0.4 % monthly unlock only. This means that the price could in theory start increasing by June 2027.

For now the planned unlocks are increasing the market supply and pushing the price down.

Data in the table below from layerzero.network/blog/the-zro-token

June 1, 2026

Bucket total unlocked locked
Foundation 433 000 000 250 000 000 183 000 000
Strategic partners 312 000 000 147 440 484 164 559 516
core contributors 255 000 000 116 875 000 138 125 000
total as of jun 1,2026 1 000 000 000 514 315 484 485 684 516

as you can see in the table above, around 48% of ZRO supply is expected to be unlocked in the coming 24months.

10-D- List of possible other reasons ZRO price can go down:

Stakeholder How they can push the price down?
Payment solutions providers not interested in integrating ZRO in their platforms
Community start taking profit, selling their ZRO position
Social media influencer Start criticizing LayerZero

11- Why ZRO go up ?

11-A- Buybacks

LayerZero foundation, stargate and LayerZero Labs can launch buybacks operations to boost their ZRO holding, those operations can be significant in size and push the price up.

11-B- Exchange listing

Listing in new exchanges or the launch of new ZRO trading pairs can generate additional visibility, liquidity, exposure to new media, partners, investors and traders. This of course will add to the existing demand and push the price up.

11-C- Institutional investors

venture capital or investment funds can allocate new capital or extend their investment in ZRO, and because those funds are long term investors, they can stabilize or push the price of ZRO up.

11-D- Network expansion

LayerZero is actually integrated to 165 supported blockchains. As the ecosystem evolve, LayerZero can expand endpoint support across new blockchains. Those expansion will increase ZRO trading and push the price up.

11-E- Protocol upgrades

developers and integrators are constantly comparing available chains and protocols, if a new upgrade allows them to develop new features, solve some development problems, reduce costs, reduce security risks,… they will choose to migrate to LayerZero. this will grow ZRO integrators and userbase, increase demand and push ZRO price up.

11-F- Staking

Staking is one of the utilities that ZRO will have after the launch ZERO, the L1 blockchain is expected by the end of 2026. if significant amount of ZRO are staked, it will reduce the supply and push the price up.

11-G- Utility extension

LayerZero is by automn 2026 launching ZERO, A L1 blockchain that is expected to achieve 2 million TPS. It is an answer to the actual and expected growth in 24/7 capital markets, institutional clearing, and automated payments and micropayments.

ZERO using ZRO will extend its utility, increase demand for the token and push its price up.

11-H- List of possible other reasons ZRO price can go up:

Stakeholder How they can push the price up?
Payment solutions providers Major payment solutions providers start integrating ZRO in their platforms
Social media influencer Promote ZRO
Asset managers launch new ZRO ETFs.
