Cryptocurrency due diligence

This post is not authoritative.

Status: in progress.

Updated: Aug 17, 2025

Who need due diligence ?

If you are an individual retail investor who wants to invest US$5 in a meme coin for fun, it is inappropriate to engage in serious and expensive process like due diligence.

If you are an investment fund planning to invest US$10M in a token, now its serious and due diligence become extremely important.

Depending on your country, local currency, income and saving you may consider the following :

Amount in USD Context What to do
5 Speculating with friends for fun! You do not need a due diligence.
100 want to try crypto! You can perform your own due diligence, DIY.
1,000 i am planning for the future! You certainly need a professional financial advisor, like your banker or an advisor working for a registered asset manager (etf,..).

There is a lot of types of entities that needs a partial or complete due diligence when dealing with cryptocurrency :

  • government agencies,
  • institutionals,
  • investor,
  • crypto businesses,
  • corporate,
  • payments providers,
  • marketplaces,
  • issuers,

there is also a lot of compliance services providers offering cryptocurrency due diligence and because it is a sophisticated and costly service they are targeting institutionals, corporate and businesses.

Very few compliance and security consultant are providing cryptocurrency due diligence to individuals, but this make sens only if this individual is a high net worth individual.

An advanced and complete Due diligence process will require a sophisticated skills set including :

  • blockchain development,
  • software engineering,
  • audit,
  • compliance,
  • legal,
  • finance,
  • market research,
  • risk management,
  • operational security,
  • cybersecurity,
  • tokenomics,
  • trading,..

deploying such process require a team of specialists because it’s difficult for one consultant to accumulate all this skills through training and real world experiences.

So what can a small retail investor do?

Because of the sensitivity of this business, sometimes dealing with people life savings and depending on the country, a small retail investor can seek advice from a licensed, registered or authorized financial or investment advisor.

Those occupations are regulated and monitored by governments authorities and agencies for compliance, crime-fighting, … which provide a level of security to retail investors.

Depending on your country, You will need to check online if the advisor is registered with the appropriate government body.

Conclusion:

you can simply mimic investors like:

  • Bitwise,
  • galaxy,
  • Hashdex,
  • grayscale,

those institutionals have the necessary HR and financial resources to perform quality due diligence and they will not include a cryptocurrency in their fund or indices unless it pass the necessary due diligence!
